Spector was the creator of Deus Ex.
The creator of Deus Exthe action role-playing game franchise originally developed by Ion Storm, has announced its retirement. In a LinkedIn post, Warren Spector said he was a month shy of his 44th year as a developer and had worked on tabletop games, 17 digital games, led small and large teams, and helped people with their careers. Now his age and health are catching up with him, and it was time to “write a few books, read a lot, give talks, maybe do some consulting.”
Spector also said that there were still three games he would like to make, but that the business had changed and it was no longer as fun for him. Although he admitted he had tried to retire in the past but changed his mind, he said he thought he meant it this time. He is generally considered one of the founding fathers of immersive simulation games, characterized by giving players the freedom to solve problems in different ways.
On Deus Exin which you play an anti-terrorist agent in a dystopian cyberpunk setting, Spector also served as director and producer. He has worked on several Ultima titles as a producer and writer, as well as on Disney’s Epic Mickey for the Wii as director. His last game was Thick as thievesa heist and stealth action game, released only a few months ago. He also worked on System Shock 3but Tencent has taken over this project and its status remains uncertain.
