The Emmy Awards are moving to Prime Video in 2027

Amazon is reportedly paying up to $25 million a year for exclusive global rights to the ceremony.

Amazon has secured exclusive rights to broadcast the Emmy Awards starting in 2027. You won’t need to be an Amazon Prime subscriber to watch, as Prime Video will stream the ceremony for free in more than 240 counties and territories. The six-year agreement with the Television Academy ends the traditional annual rotation between the ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC broadcast networks.

Prime Video may offer other Television Academy programming, such as the Hall of Fame ceremony. The Hollywood Reporter notes that it is not yet clear where viewers will be able to watch the Creative Arts Emmys in the future. Deadline reports that Amazon pays between $20 million and $25 million a year for the right to broadcast the main ceremony.

While there’s a certain irony in the fact that television’s most prestigious awards show is no longer broadcast on networks, streaming companies have had a stronghold on the Emmys for years. For example, this year’s winners of the best drama and comedy series (The Pitt And Widows Bay) are both streaming exclusives.

The Emmys will be the first of the major entertainment awards ceremonies to be broadcast exclusively on a streaming service. This is beating the Oscars to the punch. It was announced late last year that YouTube would be the exclusive site of the Academy Awards starting in 2029.
