macOS 27: five new Mac features announced next month

The macOS 27 unveiling is just weeks away, and in addition to dropping support for four Mac models, rumors indicate that the new version of the software will come with AI features and some design updates. Here’s what’s coming.

#1: New Siri

Recent days have brought two encouraging signs for the new Siri | New Liquid Glass Style Siri Icon

Siri’s AI overhaul is expected to be the headline addition not only to iOS 27, but to almost all of Apple’s software platforms, including macOS 27.

There will be a new Siri app on Mac that includes a chatbot-style interface, similar to that offered by ChatGPT and Google Gemini. And Siri will benefit from new agent capabilities to act on your Mac in response to your requests and whatever you see on the screen.

Other Siri improvements include LLM-based world awareness to answer many more questions and perform searches, support for multi-action queries, and much more.

#2: “Organize Tabs” in Safari

Apple will use AI in macOS 27 to help you organize your tabs through a new “Organize Tabs” feature.

If your tabs become unruly, Safari will let you tap a new “Organize Tabs” button that can automatically sort your tabs into groups based on common topics.

It won’t be for everyone, but if it works well, the new feature could prove a handy tool for Safari users.

#3: Apple Photos editing features

Apple Intelligence will power three new image editing tools available in macOS 27 and iOS 27.

According to Mark Gurman, these features will be called Extend, Enhance and Reframe.

  • Extend: “allows users to generate additional image content beyond the original frame”
  • Improve: “uses AI to automatically improve color, lighting and overall image quality”
  • Crop: “designed primarily for space photos… allows users to change perspective after the photo is taken”

It is expected that each new feature will use the new version of the Apple Foundation templates based on Gemini.

#4: Creating Natural Language Shortcuts

Apple’s Shortcuts app will soon make it easier than ever to create custom shortcuts.

In macOS 27, users will be able to use natural language to describe the shortcut they want to create, and then it will create itself.

Thanks to Apple Intelligence, the Shortcuts app will not only be able to suggest actions, but also create entirely new ones to respond to your shortcut request.

#5: Design Changes and Touch Optimizations

macOS 27 is also rumored to bring design changes, with two areas of emphasis expected:

  1. Liquid Glass Design Improvements
  2. Optimizations for future touch support

On the Liquid Glass side, macOS Tahoe was criticized for not offering as significant an overhaul as iOS 26. But Bloomberg says fixes will be coming for common quirks, like shadows and transparency.

As for touch optimizations, a new MacBook Ultra is expected to launch later this year as the first touchscreen Mac. For this reason, we expect some minor UI changes to better support touch.
