BOE wants a piece of the OLED supply chain for Apple’s upcoming iPad Air, aiming to land a secondary supply role behind main supplier Samsung Display, according to a report from South Korea. The Elect.
Sources cited by The Elect say the Chinese panel maker is expanding its iPad Air OLED efforts at its B12 factory in Chongqing, home to BOE’s sixth-generation OLED production line, ahead of the launch of a redesigned iPad Air that is not expected to launch until the first half of 2027. Samsung Display already has the lead supply role for that panel and is about to begin increasing production. production towards the end of this year or the beginning of next, as previously indicated.
BOE still needs to validate Apple’s qualification process. It is understood that samples have yet to be submitted for evaluation, and a verdict on whether the company will win commercial orders is not expected before the end of the year. Even a favorable result may only translate to modest volume at first, with production limited to iPad Air units for the Chinese market or refurbished devices, rather than the entire global launch.
Sources place BOE’s qualification decision in November or December, noting that Apple typically finalizes production approval one to two months before mass production actually begins. If BOE fails to reach this mark, Samsung Display will end up shouldering all of the initial production on its own.
Becoming a supplier to the OLED iPad Air would be a significant expansion for BOE, which has experience supplying OLED panels for the iPhone, but has struggled to move into larger OLED products. Samsung Display and LG Display have held this ground particularly in tablets, and BOE has recently lost, rather than gained, foothold elsewhere in Apple’s OLED line; its usage on Apple-dedicated lines has reportedly fallen from around 82% in 2024 to around 48% earlier this year, as Apple is expected to instead rely on Samsung for the upcoming OLED iPad mini.
The redesigned iPad Air is expected in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, with a hybrid OLED panel combining a glass substrate with thin-film encapsulation, a single-stack RGB emissive layer and an LTPS backplane, with a 60Hz refresh rate. This keeps it below the iPad Pro’s tandem-stack OLED panel in terms of cost, while moving the iPad Air away from an LCD screen.
BOE would also serve as a secondary supplier for Apple’s OLED MacBook Pro from its 8.6-generation B16 factory in Chengdu, but ongoing yield issues there make commercial shipments to Apple unlikely in the near future. Industry sources do not expect BOE to enter this supply chain until 2028.
