tinhkhuong/Shutterstock We live in an age where even the smallest smart speakers can deliver impressive sound, but it’s still hard to beat the audio immersion and precision you’ll feel with a great pair of headphones, whether wireless or wired. Images Tada/Shutterstock Learning a new language is a skill that takes time, patience and understanding. It has been taught since humanity first developed language and writing. Today, when it comes to learning other languages, there’s Duolingo, an app that teaches users how to speak, read and write – and which I used for a while until AI came into play. Duolingo Max uses GPT-4, and this is a feature I don’t like, because language learning and its nuances are very human. We learn through patterns we notice around us. By…
Nelikdulatov/Shutterstock A surround sound system is nothing without an amplifier to drive the speakers. One type of specialized amplifier commonly used for home theater setups is an AV receiver, an all-in-one device that combines power and routing of audio-video signals. Think of it this way: instead of plugging all of your AV components into your new smart TV, you plug them into a receiver. You will then run a dedicated HDMI cable from your receiver’s output to one of your TV’s HDMI inputs. This takes the load off your precious…

This is a great victory for the right to privacy. The United States Supreme Court has just issued a ruling limiting geofence searches by law enforcement, which could have major consequences for privacy rights across the country. For the uninitiated, this is a relatively new police technique in which police tap into tech company databases to see who was near the scene of a crime. In the 6-3 ruling, the nation’s highest court said that “an individual has a reasonable expectation of privacy with respect to his or her cell phone location information.” Justice Elena Kagan said the geofence warrants…

When it comes to controlling audio on your iPhone, what usually comes to mind is the volume buttons, for obvious reasons. But there are actually several ways to manage your iPhone audio, and surprise, surprise, it’s not just about media playback. iOS lets you control the volume of your headphones and built-in speaker, the volume at which your ringtone, alarm, and system sounds play individually, and what mode your microphone should be set to, among other things. These audio settings are usually hidden in plain sight, so you might not even realize they existed…
