Massive data centers are popping up all over the United States these days, including Meta’s newest data center in Louisiana, which spans 70 football fields. As AI expands its reach, the need for these data centers will only increase, and one startup has come up with an idea to supplement the controversial and power-hungry data centers. In addition to hyperscale AI data centers that drive up your utility bills, San Francisco-based Span wants to install a “distributed data center” in your backyard with a device the size of an air conditioner, called XFRA. Nvidia has entered the race for humanoid robotics. Through a partnership with Chinese startup Unitree, the American chipmaker is developing a robotic system with an integrated reference design focused on academic research. The idea is to help research teams access advanced hardware and, more importantly, a complete software stack that can run without proprietary platforms. From a design perspective, the Isaac GR00T reference humanoid robot is fully modular. The Nvidia Isaac GR00T platform, combined with the Nvidia Jetson Thor embedded computer, will constitute the “brains” of the design. For the body, Nvidia opted for…

Google is expanding its water management commitments, including investing in replenishment projects, to provide more water than it consumes in its data centers by 2030. The company now has 165 water management projects in 97 watersheds, which are expected to replenish 19 billion gallons per year by 2030. Google says this is more than double its consumption for 2024 and would allow the company to use more water in coming years while still meeting its goal. Based on general sentiment online, such as Erin Brockovich’s recent collaborative AI data center map, people living near these data centers are primarily concerned…
Meta has worked with the DOJ, Microsoft, Coinbase, Starlink, and international law enforcement to dismantle online scams and identify the criminal syndicates behind them. The company has received widespread criticism for allowing scammers to run rampant on its platforms and SO reportedly makes billions of dollars every year from advertising marketing scams. This particular operation focuses on criminal networks operating in Southeast Asia, which target Americans with romance scams, “pig butchery” schemes, and identity theft by law enforcement. Even though they have fallen a bit since then, SSDs remain expensive. Popular storage provider Sandisk has a plan to help you. Soon it will launch two SATA drives, the Sandisk 320 and Sandisk 520, with the express goal of making storage more accessible than M.2 NVMe SSDs. However, the new Sandisk SATA drives will sacrifice a bit of performance…

The Mac menu bar has been around since the first edition of Mac OS and has become a staple of business computing. While its role hasn’t really changed over the years, providing quick and easy access to a variety of system settings, it doesn’t always get the most love from Cupertino. Apple’s menu bar is quite malleable, capable of hosting various apps that function like the iPhone’s best widgets. Checking battery levels across devices or having a clean note-taking app can be very helpful in a pinch. However, it’s not just about replicating the iPhone widget ecosystem. Aside from the…
