Apple has sent emails to its music industry partners regarding the upcoming launch of a Made With AI label that Apple will apply to AI-generated content (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Content labeled as “materially generated using AI” will have a label visible to all Apple Music users.
In March, Apple announced Transparency Tags, a system that allows music creators to disclose when AI has been used. Transparency tags are available for artwork, tracks, compositions (lyrics), and video clips. Apple said at the time that the tags were optional and that it would rely on content providers to determine what was considered AI-generated.
In today’s email, Apple says AI transparency tags are required in “any case where AI was used to create a material portion of the content, including tracks generated by the AI platform.” Apple said AI platform-generated content is defined as “anything that is primarily derived from a generative AI service.”
In April, Apple Music vice president Oliver Schusser said Billboard that more than a third of monthly downloads on Apple Music are 100% AI-generated, but AI music accounted for less than 0.5% of actual listening. Schusser said Apple has an internal system to detect AI, but it still relies on content creators to disclose AI use.
Apple’s email did not give a specific timetable for when AI labels would launch in Apple Music, but indicated that they would appear “later this year.”
