Nintendo’s ambitions for its Switch 2 appear to be very solid. This new console will celebrate its first anniversary in two weeks, and it is already at its peak with 19.86 million copies worldwide despite a mixed first year.
At the moment, the future looks a bit hazy for 2026. We know that there are still big games planned, like The Duskbloods, the Ocarina of Time remake, or even the return of StarFox. But overall, the future looks a little timid.
However, Nintendo is very confident. Despite a price increase that will become effective from September, the Japanese firm foresees to increase console production in the coming weeks.
20 million new Switch 2s by March 2027
Although a fanfare exit, Switch 2 sales experienced a first stop at the end of 2025, before starting to rise again at the beginning of 2026. It is already approaching of the 20 million consoles sold. the 1ᵉʳ Next September, the price of the console. will increase to 499.99 euros. But that doesn’t seem to scare Nintendo.
In fact, the Japanese manufacturer has announced to Bloomberg media that it plans to increase production by 20% compared to last year. This would thus allow the production of 20 million additional consoles for March 2027. Nintendo, for its part, plans to sell 16.5 million units during its next fiscal year, which will end March 31, 2027.
If this goal is achieved, this would mean that the Switch 2 would accumulate more than 36 million consoles sold in less than two years. It would be far ahead of the figures of the PS5, which, for its part, sold 30 million consoles in two years. Five years later, the PS5 has 93.7 million consoles on the market.
The Switch 2 therefore, appears to be on track to follow in the footsteps of its older sister. The first Switch has sold, to date, 155 million machines and is only 5 million behind the PS2, the best-selling console in history. Can Switch 2 achieve this feat?
