The rumor that the new Apple Watch face of watchOS 27 intrigued me a lot

The big reveal of watchOS 27 is just a few weeks away, and one rumor indicates it could add a new Apple Watch face inspired by my all-time favorite option. Here’s why the rumor is particularly intriguing.

Modular Ultra reportedly inspired the new Apple Watch face in watchOS 27 for all users

Apple offers many different watch faces in watchOS, but my favorite is easily Modular Ultra.

Modular Ultra is exclusive to Apple Watch Ultra models, although recent models in the series have similarly sized screens.

And as I’ve written before, I consider Modular Ultra to be the biggest advantage of the Apple Watch Ultra over the models in the series.

So much so that if Modular Ultra became available on this year’s Apple Watch Series 12, I would strongly consider moving away from my current Ultra 3 model.

Which makes one of the few watchOS 27 rumors we have so far particularly intriguing. Earlier this month, Mark Gurman wrote to Bloomberg:

For watchOS 27, codenamed Orchid, Apple is testing several new faces. One of them particularly stands out: a simplified version of the Modular Ultra design. It has the same large clock as the Ultra dial, but removes the option of a large complication in the center, the row of three smaller complications above the time and information placed around the bezel. The result is a large clock that fills the top two-thirds of the screen, with a row of three smaller complications below it. This move appears to be aimed at bringing a version of the Modular Ultra experience to standard series watches.

The idea of a “version of the Modular Ultra experience” coming to Apple series models seems like it might make my wish come true.

But the details, at least as Gurman reported them, don’t look like a Modular Ultra at all.

Making sense of watchOS 27’s new watch face

If this new dial really only offers a large clock and three complications at the bottom, I’m not sure how useful this new dial is. This appears to be a potential new minor setting for the classic modular face.

There are many watch faces that already give you a great digital clock and some complications. I don’t know why Apple would need to create a new modular face for this.

But I hope what Gurman saw is only part of the story. If the new face is truly meant to bring a version of Modular Ultra to more watch models, it may offer more flexibility than expected.

I would like to see a full Modular Ultra copy/paste for the series models. Other than that, though, I’m still hoping that this new watchOS 27 watch face will offer a little more versatility than has been described.
