Microsoft abandons Teams feature that places participants in the same virtual room

Microsoft added the Teams “Together” feature during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to help employees feel like they’re working together in the same space. Now that everyone is back in the office, the company is removing this feature and directing users to Gallery. The move will reduce implementation complexity while improving video quality, Microsoft explained in its Insider blog.

Microsoft justified the removal of Together Mode by saying it “increases cognitive load on users” and “adds implementation complexity across all platforms.” He also suggests that this mode can create a choppy video experience on mobile and other “modest” devices that lack processing power.

Gallery mode, on the other hand, will allow “smoother video on modest devices”, via the number of adaptive video tiles which avoids overloading the machine. It will also simplify the meeting interface and resources that can be devoted to improvements such as “super-resolution, denoising, and improving color accuracy,” Microsoft said.

The big elephant in the room is that Teams is widely hated by users. One of the main reasons often cited is performance issues and another reason is that Teams is too complex. Ditching Together could help solve both of these problems, provided Microsoft redirects resources toward the “fundamental video improvements” it promises.
