Many things in life will scream when you let them go. But this may be the first time that won’t result in a lengthy prison sentence. The Steam Controller has an Easter egg that makes it emit a Wilhelm scream when it tips over.
The secret was discovered by Reddit user u/RF3D19 and confirmed by Woozad. The Steam Controller doesn’t have a traditional built-in speaker, so it simulates the classic scream using haptic motors. “Do whatever you want with this info, I just feel like I needed to share it ASAP,” the pioneer Redditor posted.
The Easter egg appears to have a timeout. Commenters on the Reddit thread estimate that the reset takes about a minute. However, he won’t always scream in agony, even outside of this window.
As more users discovered the thread, excitement grew to raise their $99 game controllers in the air and let them loose. “So many people are considering ditching their controllers right now,” commented u/itsactuallynot. Not everyone bought it right away. “Hmm, I can’t tell if an Easter egg or ‘put your iPhone in the microwave to charge’ is trolling,” u/havoc1428 wondered.
Luckily, the trick doesn’t require a hard surface. You can try it on something soft like a bed or pillow. If you don’t have a Steam Controller, you can see for yourself in the video below.
