Sega has canceled its mysterious “Super Game” project five years after announcing it, according to its fiscal 2026 financial results. The company made the decision following poor performance of its free-to-play and “games as a service” titles like Sonic Rumble Party. Sega also cited financial difficulties with angry Birds Rovio developer.
It’s never been clear exactly what Super Game is, with Sega previously describing it in hilariously vague terms. In 2023, the company said it involved “the concept of a game that sits head and shoulders above normal games”, having previously described it as “large-scale global games”. Super Game also involved online play in some way, with Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform powering development. Sega planned to invest around $880 million and release it in March 2026.
Anyway, he is now dead. The company moved more than 100 people from working on free-to-play games to developing games that people actually seem to care about. This includes “core IPs” like reboots of Virtua Fighter, Golden Ax, The streets of rage And Crazy taxi which are still in progress. The company is also focusing on its biggest bright spot of late, movies, with upcoming titles including Sonic the Hedgehog 4, The Angry Birds 3 movie and adaptations of Exceed, Golden Ax, Shinobi And The streets of rageamong others.
