Discord is quietly transforming its Nitro subscription into the PC gamer’s Swiss army knife. To celebrate ten years of its paid plan, the platform announced a big burst of new features grouped under the name “Nitro Rewards”. The star of the lot: a special version of Game Pass integrated at no additional cost for Nitro subscribers.
Microsoft and Discord become very friends
Yes, yet another new Game Pass formula, as was announced a few weeks ago. Microsoft and Discord simply talk about a “starter edition”, but in reality, it looks a lot like a lighter version of the Game Pass Essential formula. Nitro subscribers will have access to a catalog of over 50 PC and console games, with titles like Fallout 4, Stardew Valley, Grounded, DayZ, Deep Rock Galactic, Dishonored 2 or even Doom Eternal. Other games will be added over time.
The offer also includes 10 hours of cloud gaming per month. It’s not the all-you-can-eat buffet of Game Pass Ultimate, but it allows you to quickly launch a game from multiple devices without having to download 120 GB first. An appreciable attention at a time when certain games take up more space than an entry-level SSD (especially given the prices of storage!).
The bonus is logically reserved for Nitro subscribers who do not already have an active Game Pass subscription. The program is being launched gradually in several countries, including France, Canada, the United States, Japan and Germany. Discord also specifies that Nitro retains its current price: €9.99 per month or €99.99 per year. Nitro Basic and Nitro Classic subscribers remain on the sidelines.
Initially, Nitro was mainly used to unlock small comfort bonuses on Discord: animated avatars, better streaming quality, large files or profile decorations. Now, the platform clearly wants to push further. In its press release, Discord explains that it wants to make Nitro “ a gaming subscription that also improves everything around “. Not just chat with friends during a game, but also buy accessories, collect perks and launch games directly.
The Nitro Rewards program thus adds several reductions from gaming accessory manufacturers. At launch, subscribers get 30% at Logitech G, 15% at SteelSeries, and 20% at KontrolFreek. Enough to encourage some impulsive purchases between two games of Rocket League. The movement also goes in both directions: Game Pass subscribers will soon also receive Discord bonuses, with 250 Orbs per month, multipliers for certain quests and reductions in the platform store.
