The Steam Controller has been a hot topic in the PC gaming world in recent weeks, and a new piece of information could continue the conversation: Valve has released the CAD files for the gamepad shell. They are free to download under the Creative Commons license, meaning users can now design and build their own accessories for the Steam Controller and its puck.
The files only concern the exterior of the device; you won’t be able to 3D print the innards yourself to build your entire controller from scratch. This means that if you’re in the market for a Steam controller, you might be waiting a bit while the sold out gamepad gets restocked. Fortunately, as Valve has yet to give a release window for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame VR headsets, it’s probably not an essential purchase right now for most gamers. But it’s a good controller if you can find one, and it’s a good idea for Valve to let people get creative with the case.
