Threads begins rolling out DMs to the web, with some issues

Last July, Threads finally gave in and unlinked its DMs from Instagram. Now the platform is turning its attention to another long-standing gap: bringing DMs to the web. Here are the details.

Group messaging and wider rollout coming at some point

Earlier today, the official Threads account (on Threads, where else?) confirmed that DMs are finally rolling out to the web.

However, like most meta-related rollouts, this will be a gradual process, with no clear timeline for full availability. The company says users included in the initial test will see the paper airplane icon in the left menu, which opens their inbox.

From there, users can start one-on-one conversations, with group chats to follow at an unspecified later date.

Threads says the same privacy settings from its in-app DM system are retained, including controls over who can send messages, as well as options to restrict, block or report users.

The web version now also supports sending messages via DM by tapping the Share button and then “Send to”.

Finally, Threads says that Web DMs will “soon” be expanded to most countries for users 18 and older, but does not specify which regions are included in the initial test or when the wider rollout is expected to take place.
