Sunday Reboot: motorsport, money and “Ted Lasso”

In this week’s “Sunday Reboot”, Apple continues with F1 in Miami, the second quarter was a financial spectacular and season 4 of “Ted Lasso” can’t come soon enough.

Sunday Reboot is a weekly column covering some of the more light-hearted stories in the Apple reality distortion space from the past seven days. All this to start next week with a good first step.

This week, rumors swirled that Apple’s Vision Pro hardware team was breaking up, Adobe’s Firefly AI showed why it was still in beta, the Towson Apple Store employees’ union complained about the store’s closure, and Apple is facing both the Circuit Court and the Supreme Court simultaneously for its ongoing saga with Epic Games.

Formula 1 is growing on Apple, but it wants more

It’s Miami Grand Prix weekend, and that means F1 fever for Apple TV. For American Apple users, this may have been an unmissable promotional period for sports.

Apple Promoting Miami F1 Grand Prix

Apple flexed its promotional muscles on Wednesday to step up its U.S. motorsport coverage. This means, for US users, up to 30 simultaneous live streams, including on-board cameras, timing data and a Driver Tracker.

Then there’s the selection of IMAX theaters showing it to the public, and there’s also something happening in Times Square.

Of course, the promotion wasn’t just about Apple TV. There was a live Apple Music from Dimelo Flow and an Apple Books talk with Susie Wolff.

Apple News users benefited from live updates, while visitors could take advantage of Apple Maps to navigate the circuit over the weekend, thanks to a few additional additions.

Although this has largely been limited to the United States, Apple wants to bring the experience to other territories.

In an interview, Senior Vice President of Services Eddy Cue said he was happy with how the coverage has gone so far, but Apple wants to increase its presence. This includes increasing its streaming coverage in more countries.

Add to that the mention of a possible sequel to “F1: The Movie” and Cue’s insistence that new CEO John Ternus is a gasoline enthusiast and that Apple has big intentions to do more with motorsport.

Ternus, however, was not present this weekend. Instead, it’s at Laguna Seca.

Maybe he saw the decorated Porsche.

A neighborhood rich in money, as usual

On Thursday, Apple revealed its quarterly financial results for the second quarter of 2026. As expected, Apple crushed the quarter, with overall revenue of $111.2 billion, setting a new record for the second quarter.

For reference, Q2 2025 was 95.4 billion. This now means that Apple has crossed the $100 billion revenue mark in two successive quarters in 2026.

Apple even predicted that the third quarter numbers could reach $110 billion.

The rest of the quarter’s numbers are also quite surprising. Like iPhone revenues, which increased from $46.84 billion a year ago to $56.99 billion.

The Mac, iPad, Wearables, and Services categories also all saw growth, with the last reaching the $30 billion level. On a regional basis, we also recorded double-digit growth in each geographic segment.

All Apple had to do was launch another $100 billion stock buyback program.

While Tim Cook has had to field the entirely predictable requests for information from analysts while Ternus waits in the wings, he can at least be pleased with the company’s massive growth during his tenure.

“Ted Lasso” returns in August

“Ted Lasso” is one of Apple’s best shows on Apple TV. He has a huge following who wanted the series to last beyond just three seasons.

While we’ve heard rumors that production is underway, the release of a trailer for the fourth season confirms that it’s actually happening. This premiere will take place on August 5.

It’s a great feeling in itself, but I’m writing about it here because I really like it. This is not an unusual statement for most people, but there are some caveats to it.

First of all, I have to admit that I’m not a sports fan at all. I understand the basic idea of football, the enormous fandom that comes with it around the world, and I even live very close to a stadium, but I simply can’t watch more than ten minutes of a game before getting bored.

The second thing here is that I’m British and I’m very picky about the comedies and shows I watch. Everyone praises “The Office” in its weird UK form as well as the American version, but I really can’t stand either one.

When it comes to comedies on Apple TV, I can’t get behind most of them. I tried everything from “The Studio” to “Mythic Quest” but barely made it past the first episode.

Hell, the Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell vehicle “Spirited” was a bit of fun, but not worth rewatching. And I’ve watched “Deadpool” several times.

Obviously, I’m picky about what I watch, and it takes a lot to convince me. And yet the football-focused comedy “Ted Lasso” is the only thing I’ve watched multiple times on Apple TV.

I may not know how to properly describe the offside rule, nor truly appreciate what’s happening on Apple TV itself. Maybe I’m the empty husk of a soulless human.

But “Ted Lasso” works for me as a comedy, even with the sports theme.

Season 4 just can’t come soon enough.

Last week’s Sunday reboot covered Ternus’ CEO transition plans, the DOJ being sassy, and Apple Vision Pro’s Star Wars story.
