Plex imposes price increase on Remote Watch Pass

If you’re a Plex Remote Watch Pass subscriber, your monthly or annual fees are about to get more expensive.

Plex has increased the cost of its Remote Watch Pass from $1.99/month to $2.99/month or from $19.99/year to $29.99/year starting June 1, 2026, according to a post by xlly_s in the official Plex subreddit. Although the price hike is undeniably zero, Plex has always stated that the initial cost of the Watch Pass is only an “introductory price.”

The email received by xlly_s states: “We hope you enjoy your Remote Watch Pass and the ability to stream personal media wherever you go. We wanted to let you know that the introductory price of your Remote Watch Pass ends on June 1, 2026. Starting June 1, 2026, your subscription renewals will be at the regular subscription price.”

It’s unclear if Plex Pass subscriptions will also be hit by a price hike

This will likely encourage more users to switch to Jellyfin.

Plex Pass subscribers can share their self-hosted content libraries with friends and family for free, but if you’re not a subscriber, every remote user you add to your account needs a Remote Watch Pass. A Plex Pass costs $7/month, $70/year, or $250/lifetime.

Although Plex is the most polished and streamlined self-hosted media app on the market, the added cost of a Plex Pass, which also adds other more advanced features such as hardware transcoding, the ability to automatically skip content intro and credits, and live TV tuner compatibility, has led many people to turn to Jellyfin.

Now that the cost of Remote Watch Pass subscriptions has also increased, I can see more users jumping ship. On the other hand, this increase in cost makes Plex Pass’s $250 lifetime subscription fee a bit more attractive.
