Formula 1 coverage on Apple TV will get Dolby Atmos later this month

Formula 1 coverage on Apple TV is set to be broadcast in Dolby Atmos from the end of the month.

Beginning with the United States Grand Prix weekend on Friday, October 23 in Austin, Texas, Formula 1 coverage on Apple TV will be available in Dolby Atmos on supported devices.

Apple says the introduction of Dolby Atmos will create a more immersive presentation designed to put viewers at the center of the ride. The Atmos mix will include team radio, commentary, engines, track battles and pit lane activity.

The combination of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos aims to capture the full audiovisual intensity of Formula 1 and bring viewers closer to the action, according to Apple.

Oliver Schusser – Apple’s vice president of music, sports, Apple TV and Beats – spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the new presentation:

“If you’re a sports fan today, our view is that the experience is – I’ll be polite and say not easy. There really hasn’t been a lot of innovation. We got into sports a few years ago with the intention of making a difference for the customer, and this is a continuation of that journey.”

“Sound is what makes the emotion; it’s sound that guides you through it and creates the tension,” said John Couling, senior vice president of entertainment at Dolby Laboratories, speaking to THR. “That’s what Dolby Atmos is going to deliver.”

Atmos presentation works on supported Apple devices and Dolby-enabled TVs, soundbars, and home theater systems.

Last October, Apple and Formula 1 announced a five-year partnership including exclusive broadcast rights in the United States. The partnership allows ‌Apple TV‌ to provide comprehensive coverage of Formula 1, including all testing, qualifying, sprint sessions and Grands Prix.
