Apple reportedly working with LG on gadgets for its next Smart Home project

The doorbell, security cameras, thermostats and more could be announced next week.

We’ve heard a lot about Apple’s renewed smart home efforts from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg over the past few months, and it’s back today with a report that the company has co-developed several new gadgets in partnership with LG Electronics. Based on LG’s recent regulatory filings, Bloomberg reports that the results of this collaboration are expected to include a smart doorbell, smart thermostat, smart deadbolt lock, indoor and outdoor security cameras, and a floodlight camera. Rather than Apple’s iconic fruit symbol, the hardware would be sold under the LG banner, with the South Korean company responsible for manufacturing and product support of the devices.

This smart home line is expected to be revealed next week, and LG’s product line will likely center around a new hub device from Apple that has been in development for several years. A revamped HomePod Mini and TV box could also arrive as part of Apple’s move to offer a larger system of connected home technology. While Apple-branded devices are expected to be available soon, Bloomberg says LG accessories won’t be released for “at least a few months.”

This co-development effort also marks a change for LG. The brand has long been known for its appliances and large electronics rather than its smart home products. LG has previously partnered with Apple in other verticals, including offering Apple software through its smart TVs and serving as a third-party monitor option for the MacBook ecosystem. It also produces the panels for Apple’s current line of Mac monitors, the Studio Display and Studio Display XDR.
