The price of a used PlayStation 5 Pro is skyrocketing
Buying a used console is usually a good way to save money. However, that’s not really the case at GameStop anymore, at least not if you’re buying Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro. Indeed, the retailer recently increased its used prices, increasing the sticker price for a used PS5 Pro to $1,399.99 in October 2026, and that’s only if it’s a digital edition. GameStop also increased the price of a used PS5 Pro with disc drive to $1,499.99.
The price here is especially confusing when you think about the fact that a brand new PS5 Pro from Sony still only costs $899.99. Of course, the console would have to be in stock for you to buy it, which is just another part of the problem as Sony struggles to meet demand for the device it launched in 2024. Plus, GameStop is aware of the price gap. An alleged employee shared an alleged internal memo regarding the price hike on Reddit, according to PushSquare. The reported memo tells staff that the used console will cost more than the new one and that the decision to do it this way was intentional.
Why have used PS5 Pro prices jumped to this level?
Six months ago, a used PS5 Pro at GameStop cost $807.49, which is what the retailer was charging when we recommended PlayStation fans not wait to buy a PS5 until April 2026. Used prices were already starting to rise after Sony announced a price increase at the time, and we’ve now seen the biggest increase with used PS5 Pros, which have increased by more than $600 since then.
As for the exact reasons, part of it has to do with Sony’s pricing. The PS5 Pro launched at $699.99 in November 2024, but increased to $749.99 in August 2025, then jumped another $150 to $899.99 in April 2026, with Sony blaming the “global economic landscape” for the increase. Of course, the main reason for this problem is that AI companies are buying chips and memory to power data centers, driving up the prices of almost all types of electronics.
At the new price of a used PS5 Pro, you’re not far off the roughly $1,500 it would cost to build a gaming PC with hardware roughly equivalent to the PS5 Pro. Of course, you won’t be able to play “Grand Theft Auto 6” when it arrives in November 2026, as it will only be released on consoles to begin with. And some think that could be another big part of what explains why demand is so high.
Buying second hand is the only option for many
The situation is not helped by the fact that the new PS5 Pros have become almost impossible to find, whatever the price or conditions of sale. Sony’s store often lists the device as unavailable, while Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and GameStop’s inventory is also sold out. However, some people became desperate enough to bite, with one user even posting in the PS5 Pro subreddit that they were so tired of missing restock alerts that they ended up buying a used one even though it was barely cheaper than a new one at the time.
Of course, the reaction to GameStop’s new prices is about what you’d probably expect from such a dramatic rise. Some users are explaining that “no game is worth $1,400”, in relation to the upcoming version of “GTA 6”, exclusively for Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 at launch. This is of course a matter of opinion, and for some, it may be worth the extra price asked for the game, which took over a decade to develop. If we had to recommend anything, we’d suggest just picking up the base PS5 right now, as it seems to run the game very well in the expanded look “GTA 6” developer Rockstar introduced earlier this year.
