A fourth RuneScape game is in development with Unreal Engine
Jagex says it will reveal more details about the game, tentatively named RS4, next year.
The fourth major installment of the RuneScape world is coming and it is developed with Unreal Engine. Jagex announced the upcoming game during RuneFest, its annual convention for all things RuneScape, with a working title of RS4 and an accompanying trailer.
While the minute-long video doesn’t reveal much about the latest MMO, it appears that players will be able to ride and battle dragons. RS4 will add to Jagex’s roster of RuneScape games, including RuneScape, Old RuneScape School And RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Notably, Jagex has stated that the upcoming title is not intended to replace older titles, explaining that it is “designing RS4 to sit alongside them as an additional way to experience RuneScape and the world of Gielinor.”

Although the new MMO will still take place in the same world, Jagex explained that RS4 takes place in the Sixth Age, years after the events of RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Players will start in the Ashenfall zone which was first revealed in the RuneScape: Dragonwilds game, which served as Jagex’s expansion into the open-world survival genre. It is interesting to note that RS4 was initially intended as an extension of RuneScape: Dragonwilds called Shadows of Ashenfallbut the development process resulted in a game that more closely resembled Jagex’s previous MMO games, leading to the creation of a standalone game, according to Polygon.
There’s no word on when RuneScape’s fourth installment will be released, but Jagex said it’s an “extremely ambitious project and the game is still a few years away.” However, fans will have something to help them out as Jagex also announced a RuneScape animated series developed by Lyrical Animation in partnership with YouTuber MoistCr1TiKaL. Development of the TV show is still in its early stages, but Jagex plans to share more details about it next year.
