What Google Maps Wheelchair Accessible Routes Really Tell You

The best navigation apps go beyond the bare minimum to ensure that all types of users can reach their destination without issue. While most users only care about how quickly they can get somewhere, those who need mobility aids like wheelchairs or walkers have much more to consider. And while there are great alternatives to the service, Google Maps’ wheelchair accessible directions provide valuable assistance in this area.

Wheelchair accessible routes can provide users with important information to facilitate transportation. For public transportation, Google can help you identify which trains or buses have ramps or other accessibility features. The routes also indicate whether there are paths between different stations or bus stops that are more easily accessible to people who rely on mobility equipment. This comes on top of an earlier Google Maps update from last year that improved public transport features. If you have selected wheelchair accessible walking routes, the app shows you paths that avoid steps and are much easier to navigate, where applicable.

Data on these routes and other accessibility features is collected through the Local Guides program, where users can contribute to Google Maps to earn rewards by reviewing locations, adding photos, and answering accessibility-related questions. Since this is primarily a volunteer-based approach, this means that some areas do not have access to wheelchair-accessible routes – although a user in the US is unlikely to face coverage issues. Additionally, because the feature depends on user reviews, it may not update in real time and cannot account for unannounced builds and other abrupt changes.

How to enable wheelchair accessible directions and other accessibility features in Google Maps

There is no specific in-app toggle in the settings to enable wheelchair accessible routes in Google Maps. Instead, you can enable the feature when selecting a route after adding a destination. To do this, select a destination, choose walking or public transport and tap the three dots next to your current location in the upper right corner of your screen. From there, select Options from the drop-down menu and you can choose “Wheelchair Accessible” under “Best Route.”

More accessible routes for wheelchair users aren’t the only help Google Maps offers to people with reduced mobility. You can also enable the Accessible Locations option to find out more details about how your destination accommodates people in wheelchairs. When the feature is enabled, you may see a wheelchair icon next to locations that offer accessible seating, toilets, and parking spaces. As with wheelchair accessible routes, a location showing this icon means that other Google Maps users, including those with reduced mobility, have checked the accessibility.
