Sony implements lottery system to deal with PS5 Pro shortage in Japan

Buyers will need to prove they actually use the PlayStation to be able to purchase.

PlayStation players in Japan will have to prove they actually play on the console And possibly enter a lottery to be able to get a PS5 Pro. Sony Japan has announced that anyone wishing to purchase a PS5 Pro in the country will have to meet a number of conditions. First, they must play with a Sony account registered in Japan, which they will also need to use to purchase the Pro console. They must be logged into their account and have played a minimum of 60 hours on a PS5 or PS4, or both, between September 27, 2024 and September 27, 2026.

If and only if they meet these conditions, they will be able to submit a request to purchase the console starting October 7. Eligible applicants approved for purchase can purchase a unit from October 26 to November 2. Sony will implement a lottery system if it receives more requests than the number of units in stock. The system could prevent dealers from getting their hands on units to resell and prevent foreigners from purchasing units in Japan when they visit.

In the United States, the PS5 Pro has not been available for purchase at major retailers for some time now, as the company is facing stock shortages. Like the rest of the industry, Sony is facing component supply constraints, which it expects will continue until early 2027. Despite the PS5 Pro price hike by $150, there is strong demand for the PS5 Pro, especially after GTA VI was officially announced. The game is PS5 Pro Enhanced, meaning it can take advantage of the console’s more advanced hardware for better performance and graphics.
