Google recently added the much-anticipated speedometer to the Google Maps app on Android Auto. The feature displays your current speed along with available speed limit data on your car’s screen, making it much easier to monitor your speed and stay safe. It took a while for Android Auto users to get this feature, however, as it was available on other platforms since 2019. However, many drivers using Android Auto may have to wait a little longer before they can use it properly.
Although the feature was only added in July, users are already experiencing issues, mainly in the form of the speedometer completely disappearing. Users who could use this feature suddenly lost access to it, while others never had the chance to use it in the first place. Reddit users are showing that this behavior is inconsistent, with one user clarifying that they lost the feature while their spouse did not.
The speedometer isn’t the only feature that Google Maps is suddenly missing on Android Auto. Users also report the lack of real-time traffic details, traffic light information, and the ability to see stop signs on a car’s screen. The disappearance of these features from the Android Auto Maps app also appears to be random: some drivers have lost access to all of these features, while others who can still access the speedometer can no longer see traffic updates.
How to Fix Speedometer Not Showing in Google Maps

The issue of speedometer disappearing from Google Maps is inconsistent, as it appears for some users but not others. This makes it difficult to provide a universal solution, but some users have solved the problem by opting out of beta programs and using the latest stable versions of the apps for Android Auto and Google Maps. Avid Android Auto users also claim that clearing the Google Maps and Android Auto cache or downloading an older version of the apps can sometimes temporarily fix the problem. If none of these work, there are some great Google Maps alternatives you can try, and many of them feature speedometers and traffic information.
For the most part, these fixes only allow you to use the speedometer on an active route. An always-on speedometer is in the works, but its availability is currently limited. A Google community engagement manager responded to complaints about the issue, stating that the ability for the speedometer to work without an active route is being rolled out. Some users already have access, others do not. There’s no deadline for when the feature will be available to everyone, but since it’s already rolling out to some users, it probably won’t take too long. Until then, it might be worth looking into some Android Auto alternatives for your car.
