Here’s how to create your own personalized Waze voice

If you’ve been using Waze for a while, you’ve probably already browsed many of the app’s original voices for your readers. This is one of the reasons why Waze is better than Google Maps in terms of customization. When you get tired of one voice, you can simply choose a new one from at least 200 navigation voices in multiple languages. For English alone, you have over 80 different options to choose from.

But even with this wide choice of voices, you might eventually feel like none of them really speak to you personally (pun intended). Luckily, there’s a hidden Waze feature that lets you create custom voices to use for navigation. This option can be useful when you prefer to hear a familiar voice, such as that of your spouse, mother or friend, while you are on the road. You can even put your own spin on navigation prompts to make driving more exciting. Let’s take a look at how to create custom voices in Waze for your next trip.

You can create your own voices in Waze directly from the app settings. Here’s how to do it:

1. Open Waze.
2. Go to the hamburger menu in the upper left corner.
3. Tap Settings.
4. Select Voice & Sound.
5. Under Voice, choose Current Voice.
6. Tap New Voice.
7. Tap OK to continue.
8. When prompted, allow Waze to access your microphone. You may be asked to open the Settings app to allow permission.

From here you can now start saving lines. Just press one, press the button to record and say the prompt. To stop recording, simply tap the blue square. If you want to hear the recorded line, play it again by selecting the blue play icon. Once you are happy with the recording, tap Save and move to the next line to save. Keep in mind that all lines must be six seconds or less. Once you’ve finished going through all the sentences, or if you prefer not to save everything, choose the Save/Done button in the upper right corner. You will be prompted to add a name for the custom voice. Waze will then automatically set your custom voice as the current navigation voice. However, for any phrase you haven’t recorded, Waze will default to one of the built-in voices.

If you want to delete the custom Waze voice you created, you need to go to Voice & Sound again in Settings. Then go to Current Voice, tap your custom voice and look for the Remove Voice option at the very bottom of the page. If, however, you just want to receive less frequent alerts – one of the reasons some users don’t like Waze – you can enable the new Less Chatty setting.
