Modern consoles work in both orientations, but there are other considerations to take into account.
For the most part, modern consoles can be parked vertically or horizontally just fine. All PlayStation 5 models, as well as Xbox Series X and Series S, have been designed to work in both directions. So, you can choose based on the available space and desired look.
The main factor to consider is air circulation, as consoles need space to breathe. Keeping your hardware healthy for a long time is especially important now that console prices are constantly rising.
For obvious reasons, you shouldn’t jam a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S into a tightly closed media cabinet or stack other devices on top of it. Neither console should be placed directly against walls and you should never wait until you need an industrial vacuum cleaner to remove dust. Both console makers recommend placing hardware on a stable surface, which makes sense given the weight of these cases and their vulnerability to catastrophic drops.
Before making a decision, examine the vent locations and surrounding furniture or shelves. If putting it down or raising it blocks an intake or exhaust, do the opposite. Other than these caveats, the details depend on your situation.
Stability, disk drives and your available space
The practical differences mainly concern stability and which console you own. Vertical generally saves space and is useful in a narrow entertainment center or if your gaming area is crowded. But it also makes the system easier to overturn. If you have rambunctious dogs or particularly adventurous children, vertical placement could be a problem. Using the stand included with the PS5 and Series X will help, but it’s not a perfect solution for sugar-fueled kids.
On the other hand, horizontal works well under a TV for aesthetics and uniformity. Although it can swallow up more space, it has a much lower center of gravity and is therefore the more stable option. If your choices are limited to the edge of a desk, under a TV, or low enough that a wagging dog’s tail could spell disaster, go horizontal.
The argument that a disc-compatible console must be placed horizontally to play discs correctly is no longer as relevant as it once was. Today’s consoles are designed to work in both directions, and they only read discs when installing games or to quickly verify ownership when booting a title on disc. The small advantage of horizontal here is that it’s easier to remember which direction the disc is going (label up) compared to vertical (label left). Additionally, given that Sony is giving physical media fans a gigantic digital middle finger, inserting discs will be a moot point for the PlayStation audience going forward.
In short, positive airflow and cable placement, as well as necessary shelf space, should be your primary concerns.
Is the PS5 at higher risk of overheating when vertical?
There is no evidence that holding the PS5 console vertically has a negative impact on airflow or cooling. The only factor that really matters is the amount of space surrounding the console, regardless of its orientation. According to Sony, the PS5 should never be placed in a cramped location and should be at least four inches away from wall surfaces.
If your PS5 is getting hot, turn off the console first, then check for blocked air vents. Nearby heat sources, dust buildup, or excessive clutter around the console can all contribute to excessive heating. Proper dusting involves removing the side panels and removing any debris or dust with a soft brush or vacuum cleaner. There are plenty of videos, how-to guides, and instructions on opening your PS5 console for cleaning. If you only remove the side covers, it’s an easy job. Going further is possible, but it’s risky if you don’t know what you’re doing. You can void the warranty (assuming it is still active) if you make a mistake.
Dust accumulation is something to watch out for, whether your console is laid flat or vertically. Prioritize cleaning, maintenance, and safe placement, and your PS5 should last a long time.
