As Google prepares Android Auto for a major update by teasing users with new icons and more, a new Google Maps update brings a slight but noticeable improvement for drivers. Although Google Maps has shown driver information such as traffic lights since August 2020 (as does Apple Maps, for what it’s worth, and Waze is currently rolling out a similar feature), this new feature provides more relevant information about intersections.
Spotted and tested by 9to5Google, Google Maps now offers Android Auto users a pop-up with information about an upcoming intersection. These pop-ups can warn users of approaching traffic lights and stop signs. Originally, this information was static on the map, but the update should make these notifications more visible when approaching a specific turn or intersection. The change is rather small, but it may help prevent some users from accidentally passing a stop sign.
Like other Android Auto features, this one could make long journeys easier, although more obvious intersection information could also help those driving through unfamiliar areas. As of now, Google hasn’t been specific in terms of a release schedule for users, but with the update likely being server-side, that suggests it may take anywhere from a few days to several months for the update to reach a majority of users. Additionally, this new feature works on smartphones using Google Maps, which could expand it to other infotainment operating systems.

Google has already started unveiling new Google Maps features in 2026, including Gemini-based conversational navigation and deeper immersion through 3D route visualization, but users should expect the benefits to keep coming. With artificial intelligence being the latest buzzword in big tech, Google naturally integrated its proprietary model, Gemini, virtually everywhere it could, including Google Maps.
In addition to new pop-up traffic notifications that make it easier to follow routes, additional updates include more route information, as well as the ability to “smart zoom” and make buildings transparent. Google also promises more natural voice guidance with more precise instructions. Users can also rely on an updated Street View that displays destination details before a trip and offers parking recommendations when you arrive.
Another new Google Maps feature also includes more information when the app suggests a different or alternative route. Essentially, the app now lets users know if a specific route may be faster due to tolls or if a certain distance may be longer due to traffic. As for Android Auto, it’s also getting a significant update this year that includes a new Material 3-inspired redesign, new widgets, and even access to video apps. Users can expect the redesigned Android Auto to roll out over the coming months.
