Some Apple Music songs may not be available in your region

Apple Music offers users a large collection of music, but every now and then you may search for a song and receive the message: “This item is currently not available in your country or region.” It’s really disappointing, especially if it’s a song you were really looking forward to playing. Unfortunately, this isn’t always something you can get around. Sometimes the song is legitimately not available in your region.

Other times, however, it may just be a bug. This type of behavior can make Apple Music unreliable, but you can often get around these kinds of messages with a few simple solutions. First, check that the warning appears because the song is indeed no longer available. The easiest way to do this is to search for it and see if it shows up as available. If another copy appears and plays normally, you can remove the grayed out version from your library and re-add the new version instead. When you transfer your playlists to Apple Music, the same versions may not be available on Apple’s service. If you actually moved to a new region and a song is unavailable because of that, you unfortunately have to wait until that track is available in your new region or find it through another service. If you actually want to change your region on your Apple account to bypass region locking, you will need to spend any remaining account credit and change any subscriptions you have set up in your old region before you can change regions.

Apple manages all its content based on the region of your account, so you will have to cancel everything and configure it in the new region. This also means that you might encounter this issue if you try to listen to music while traveling to a region other than the one you have set up. Apple Music offers many features, like lossless audio support; not being able to listen to the songs you want to listen to is a problem, but the company is still beholden to region locks and licensing.

The sad truth about apps like Apple Music is that not every song will always be available everywhere. Most of this comes down to rights – with details ranging from licensing fees to copyright and other legal issues. Media availability may vary depending on your country and even your region within a country. Much like other streamers, Apple’s licensing agreements with record labels will change periodically. When these deals end, if new deals are not made, then song availability may change significantly.

Other issues with songs can occur if your payment information is outdated or unsupported, which can happen when you move to an area. You can also re-download songs if the ones you find unavailable have already been downloaded for offline use. Sometimes files may get corrupted which may make them unavailable. Music can suddenly become unavailable if the verification options Apple relies on come back to zero.

Because Apple Music uses digital rights management (DRM) to protect its content from digital pirates, verification issues may limit your access to music.
