In a likely effort to attract Gen Z viewers to its app, Amazon Prime Video is adding more short-form content. It will now offer a curated selection of short news snippets from several reputable sources as part of the news section of the app. The goal is to help people get a quick overview of national and local news when they don’t have time to follow regular news coverage or comprehensive on-demand news segments. The feature appears to be influenced by an industry-wide shift to incorporate more and more short-form TikTok-like content. In May 2026, Prime Video took the first step in this regard by offering a scrollable vertical short video stream called Clips that features personalized moments from various movies and TV shows. Clips reside on the home page and are primarily designed to make content discovery easier.
News clips are available free to all Amazon Prime and non-Prime customers and are in addition to the news coverage already available on the service. For those unfamiliar with Prime Video, aside from on-demand content, live entertainment, and sports, the service offers local, national, and international news through major providers as part of its news section.
How to access news clips on Prime Video
Amazon is initially adding news clips to the Prime Video app on smart TVs and other living room devices, such as streaming media players. You can access it by navigating to the news section using the top navigation bar in the Prime Video app, then scrolling down to the “Trending Topics” or “Local News” carousel. It is currently limited to the United States, with no word on if and when it will roll out to the rest of the world. That said, the feature is confirmed to come to mobile and web later, but the company hasn’t shared a timeline.
As TikTok and short-form videos increase the amount of news consumed by the Gen Z population, Amazon is likely hoping that by providing short-form news clips on Prime Video, it may be able to entice some Gen Z users to spend more time on its app. However, it remains to be seen whether Prime Video will opt for a TikTok-like vertical format for news clips when the feature rolls out to mobile devices.
