Not in my garden! It’s the rallying cry of anti-wind activists who want to prevent this clean energy source from appearing near them. They attend local planning commission meetings and preach on Facebook about the dangers of wind turbines. The fact is that most studies show that there is very little risk. This is not to say that wind turbines are not dangerous. A turbine blade fell and killed an 81-year-old man in Akita, Japan, in 2025, so the risk is very real.
Standing under a commercial wind turbine can be intimidating. On average, a hub is 350 feet above the ground. The blades rotate in circles 450 feet in diameter. They are huge. But are they dangerous? Researchers behind a 2025 study of a blade failure in Kansas say it is unlikely in their case that lightning struck the blade, throwing debris more than 2,600 feet. The smaller pieces of debris did not have enough kinetic energy to hurt people, and the larger pieces fell under the turbine without hurting anyone. Researchers said adequate setback distance is important to keep wind turbines safely away from people.
Similar suggestions were made to improve safety after a 2024 tornado in Iowa destroyed six wind turbines, although no one was injured. The researchers suggested that future designs should account for tornadoes. Another study tested the risk of ice flying from turbines onto highways. The study authors recommended a risk assessment based on the proximity of people. Currently, there is no national setback rule for wind turbines, but many local jurisdictions require 1.1 times the height of the wind turbine, which would be approximately 630 feet for an average wind turbine. Japanese authorities say the man killed in Akita was “dozens of meters” from the wind turbine when the blade struck him.
Are wind turbines bad for your health?
Health concerns are behind some of the biggest protests against wind turbines, including claims about wind turbine syndrome. This condition, allegedly caused by infrasound, has not stood up to scientific scrutiny. Most research suggests there is no discernible health impact. A major study in 2026 found no detectable decline in physical or mental health in the average person living near wind turbines. The study covered 120,000 households over more than a decade. Another study in the Netherlands evaluated the primary care records of 350,000 to 560,000 people over a decade, finding no consistent association between wind turbines and health problems.
One of the disadvantages of wind turbines is that they emit noise. About a thousand feet away, it sounds like the hum of a refrigerator. Noise can disrupt your life, including your sleep. However, a 2025 study in Canada found that wind turbine noise did not increase the risk of serious sleep disorders. This study is interesting because the researchers tested people living at different distances from the wind turbines. The results were similar except for one problem. People whose noise from the turbines was loudest were more likely to blame the turbines for their sleep problems.
Annoyance is another story. The constant buzz can make it feel like you’re living just a few blocks from a main road. In rare cases, the spinning blades cast flickering shadows across your windows. But in both cases, people can get used to it. A 2025 study in Japan found that over a decade, annoyance from turbine noise and flickering shadows had decreased. Researchers said this suggests residents could adapt. This is good news for residents of the five states with the most wind farms and who rely on one of the most efficient energy sources on the planet.
