Data storage prices have soared throughout 2026, reaching several times their levels just a year ago. A single terabyte of solid state drive storage can cost anywhere from $120 to over $200, and even a much slower hard disk drive (HDD) costs over $70. If you buy an external drive, you want it to last so you can get the most out of your purchase for life. Unfortunately, there are many common events and daily habits that kill your external drives before their time.
The lifespan of a hard drive is dictated by factors such as physical wear and damage, while SSDs can experience a finite number of write cycles. If you frequently unplug drives while transferring data or subject them to extreme temperatures, this can significantly shorten their lifespan. With a hard drive, dropping the drive, moving it quickly, or exposing it to external vibration while transferring data can also permanently damage it.
SSDs are much more durable. However, there are still things that can kill an SSD before its time. Improper data handling and power surges can cause an SSD’s internal components to degrade more quickly, and leaving them off for long periods of time can lead to data loss. Hard drives are generally considered better for long-term storage, but whether you have an HDD or an SSD, keep these things in mind to extend their lifespan.
1. Poor data management in SSDs
To ensure your SSD lasts as long as possible, it’s important to understand how data is processed within the drive. Unlike a hard drive, an SSD has a finite number of write cycles, meaning it has a maximum capacity of data it can write before it begins to degrade. This is usually stated in terabytes written (TBW). If your SSD has an endurance of 80 TBW, you can write a total of around 80,000 GB of data before running into problems. When you’re writing just a few gigabytes (GB) of data each day, it can easily last more than a decade, and it’s likely you’ll run into more problems before you reach the limit. However, if you transfer 80 GB every day, your drive may run out of cycles in just under three years.
Another reason your SSD may die sooner than expected is if you constantly keep it near full capacity. An SSD is made up of billions of small cells, each containing a certain amount of data. If data were to be allocated randomly, some cells would experience more cycles than others, resulting in faster failure. To combat this, modern SSDs use a feature called wear leveling. This distributes all new data evenly across all available cells. However, for wear leveling to work properly, you need a certain amount of empty space on your disk. If you have 50% of your total capacity free, all data written is divided equally among that number of cells. However, if you only have 5% of your total storage left, there are far fewer cells to distribute wear and tear between. Therefore, it is important to keep a certain amount of free storage space to extend the life of your SSD.
2. Physical impact and mechanical damage to hard drives
There are two main reasons why SSDs are preferred over HDDs. The first is speed, because a hard drive has a mechanical read/write head that physically moves to store or retrieve data, while an SSD handles these operations electronically. The other reason is durability, as hard drives are incredibly prone to physical damage due to their structure and composition.
In a hard drive, the read/write head presents a point of failure because its ability to move means the joint is weaker than other parts permanently attached together. Whether you drop your hard drive or move it quickly while writing data, there’s a good chance it will damage the fragile moving head, rendering the entire drive unusable.
Additionally, even subtle external vibrations from nearby devices can also interfere with or damage a hard drive. To combat this problem, hard drive manufacturers produce more durable drives, such as specific enterprise-grade drives. These attach the motor to both sides of the chassis, whereas typical hard drives only attach it to one. Although this does not protect the drives from physical shock, it does dampen vibrations to some extent.
3. Power outages and surges
Power outages and power surges pose a risk to any electrically powered device. Although sometimes you might get by with a simple corrupted save file on a PC, power issues can also permanently damage your device. How power outages and surges affect your external drive depends on the type of drive you have. Hard drives are more at risk, as a sudden loss of power can cause the internal read/write head to crash into the platter. This may result in data loss or complete disk failure. This isn’t a big deal if you rarely have power outages, but if your area constantly experiences outages and power outages on the electrical grid, it might be a good idea to get a UPS for your PC.
SSDs are more resilient to power outages. Your data is still susceptible to corruption, but the drive itself must continue to function because no moving parts can be damaged. However, constantly being subjected to dirty power (undervoltage or overvoltage) can still damage external drives. Likewise, and perhaps more importantly, an electrical surge can potentially short out your SSD, like any other electronic equipment. Again, while not a necessity if you experience it rarely, a surge protector can help reduce the risk of component damage from an electrical surge.
4. Leaving SSDs idle for long periods of time
SSDs are superior to hard drives in most aspects, but the latter are still considered optimal for long-term storage and archiving. You can leave a hard drive locked in a closet for a decade, and as long as it’s kept safe, you can access the data again without issue. This is due to the way data is stored on a hard drive: once written, the data remains on the disk indefinitely until explicitly erased.
SSDs work differently because data is stored as electrons trapped in NAND flash memory cells. These cells slowly lose their charge over time, and if a certain amount of time passes, the data may disappear. The time it takes for this to happen is different for each SSD. According to specifications set by JEDEC, the organization at the forefront of setting standards for modern SSDs, an idle SSD should retain data for at least a year without external power. The longer it stays off beyond this period, the more likely you are to lose important data.
If you want to use an external drive specifically for long-term archiving purposes and plan to leave it unattended for years, an HDD is probably a better choice than an SSD. If you have an SSD and want it to retain data for years, it’s a good idea to connect it to a computer every few months just to refresh the data and make sure it’s still there.
5. Using Cheap Cables and Suddenly Unplugging
You might not really consider unplugging a drive when transferring files is taking too long, but doing so can result in data loss or damage to the entire drive. Likewise, you should avoid cheap accessories when using an external drive, as a flimsy cable that often disconnects is not only frustrating to deal with, but can also pose a risk to both your data and the drive it’s stored on.
In a hard drive, a sudden disconnection while the read/write head is moving can cause it to suddenly stop or, in extreme cases, collide with the platter. This can lead to bad sectors and corrupted data, but it can also permanently damage your drive and render it unusable. There is no threat of physical damage if you use an external SSD, but your data is still at risk. If you are transferring data and the cable is disconnected, the moved data may be corrupted. If this is your only copy of this data, it may result in its permanent deletion. This usually only affects the moved data, but if you overwrite a large file on the SSD, the entire file may become corrupted as well.
