Blizzard also confirmed that a Diablo animated series is in development with Netflix.
BlizzCon brought some unexpected news for the Diablo franchise, including a spring 2029 release window for the next installment in the video game series, as well as confirmation of an animated television series adaptation in the works with Netflix. For the game, the teaser video and Blizzard’s article only suggest the continuation of the story after the events of Diablo IVbut it looks like players will be thrown straight into the flames of hell.
Like the Diablo V teaser, the confirmation of the animated TV series was also sketchy and we still don’t know the release date or which animation studio is in charge of the adaptation. Blizzard said it would have more to share about the series throughout the development process and only hinted that “the darkness of Sanctuary spreads.”
For those who aren’t devoted Diablo fans, rumors of a television adaptation of the franchise have been circulating for a while. A 2020 report suggested that a Diablo television series would be made in an anime style and was in pre-production with Netflix handling distribution. Beyond confirming the franchise’s fifth major game and a TV series, Blizzard has also hinted at similar adaptations for its other popular titles, including Overwatch and Warcraft.
