The company initially announced and then abandoned the feature.
Nintendo has finally provided variable refresh rate (VRR) support on Switch 2 for game shows, after initially announcing and then quietly dropping the feature, the company announced on its Japanese site. “VRR output is now supported in TV mode,” Nintendo wrote. “When the software and TV support it, video will stream at a refresh rate that matches the processing speed of the game. A Nintendo Switch 2 Dock update is required to enable this feature.”
VRR reduces stuttering, tearing, and other screen issues by matching your TV’s refresh rate to the game’s frame rate. When Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 last year, the company said the console would support this feature in both handheld and tethered (TV) mode. Despite actually providing VRR on the handheld OLED display, Nintendo erased information about docked VRR support and later confirmed that it would be a handheld-only feature.
In July, however, Nintendo posted a job posting seeking a “senior display engineer” with “knowledge of display technologies such as HDR and VRR.” This strongly suggests he’s still working on the feature, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
In addition to VRR support, the new Switch 2 firmware update includes a new portable boost toggle, a Mii Editor update, and the ability to transfer your entire system to another Switch 2 console. Just yesterday, during its Direct event, Nintendo revealed Ravenous Metroid and a Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, and will be released on a 40th anniversary Legend of Zelda-themed Switch 2 console next month.
