The Pocket Duo seems to be a direct competitor to the Ayn Thor.
The dual-screen retro handheld craze continues with Retroid joining the trend. The handheld maker provided very few details in its teaser video, but we do know that Retroid has named its modern remake of the Nintendo DS the Pocket Duo.
The teaser only showed a grim glimpse of the finished product, with no indication of specifications, pricing, or release dates. There are already a handful of options on the market, so Retroid should have a general plan to build on to ensure the Pocket Duo is competitive in this space. Additionally, the handheld maker has plenty of experience with similar devices between releases like the Retroid Pocket 6 and Pocket Flip 2, the latter of which features a 5.5-inch OLED display. However, based on the limited information contained in the teaser, it’s difficult to say exactly what its next multi-screen gadget will look like. When it comes to internals, Retroid could opt for something as powerful as the Qualcomm QCS8550 chip in its recently released Pocket Nova, which can handle simulation of Nintendo DS, 3DS, and even Switch titles.
Beyond its experience with clamshell handhelds, Retroid has also tried a dual-screen setup in a roundabout way. The company offers a dual-screen add-on that attaches a 5.5-inch AMOLED display to its other handhelds. Unlike that accessory, it looks like Retroid will be opting for a cable-free, clip-less design for its upcoming Pocket Duo, as hinted in the teaser video. It’s too early to say what the price will be, but it will likely fall somewhere between the Anbernic RG DS, which starts at $100, and the Ayaneo Pocket DS, which costs at least $579. Thanks to its dual screens, we expect the Pocket Duo to be more expensive than its recent Pocket Nova, which starts at $239, meaning it could be a direct competitor to the Ayn Thor.
