Apple has informed some customers who recently ordered a Mac mini with an M4 chip that has not yet shipped that it will upgrade their order to an equivalent version of the new Mac mini with an M6 chip at no additional cost.

Thank you for your recent Mac order. We know you can’t wait to receive your purchase.
As you may know, Apple recently announced the new Mac mini. Since your order has not yet shipped, we have automatically upgraded you to the new Mac mini at no additional cost.
Since the Mac mini now starts at $899 instead of $799 in the US, some customers are actually getting $100 off the new model.
One customer on social media was excited to learn that not only would they receive the new Mac mini at no extra cost, but they would also have their delivery estimate increased from October to September. On the other hand, a student sent us an email to complain that his delivery quote had been delayed by several weeks following the free update, because he said he urgently needed the computer for his studies. The student said Apple did not offer him a choice to accept or decline the free upgrade.
Apple this week announced the new Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro chip options, as well as a new Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chip options. Both new Macs are available for pre-order now and will launch on Tuesday, September 22.
The previous generation Mac mini was released in November 2024.
