Cultured Code today released Things 3.23, including a significant update to the app’s handling of task repetition, addressing two of the most requested changes from users.
Until now, repeating tasks in Things lacked some of the flexibility of standard tasks and today’s update fills that gap with a handful of smaller, valuable improvements across the app. Changes in the latest update include:
- Complete repetitive tasks sooner: Repetitive tasks now show a normal checkbox, like any other task, allowing them to be completed sooner, with the next copy scheduled based on the existing rule.
- Make an exception or update the rule: Rescheduling a fixed-schedule repeating task by moving it to a new date now offers a choice between “Make an exception”, which moves only that instance and leaves the rest of the calendar intact, and “Update rule”, which changes the recurrence pattern itself in the future, so moving a task from Monday to a Tuesday causes it to repeat every Tuesday from that point on.
- Edits repeated once completed: Tasks that repeat for a period of time after completion, rather than on a fixed schedule, simply move to the new date when rescheduled, without prompting.
- Create the next copy: Selecting “Repeat” then “Make Next Copy” allows users to get a head start on a task or project before its due date, by adding notes or completing checklist items in advance.
- Repeat icon: Generated copies of repeating tasks now have a small gray repeat icon to indicate their origin.
- Redesigned configuration dialog: The configuration dialog for configuring repetitive tasks now has a visual refresh with easier date selection.
- Group actions: Multiple repetitive tasks can now be paused, resumed or stopped at the same time.
- Unified code base: Viewing and editing tasks, both in lists and when expanded, is now driven by the same code on Mac, iPadOS, and iOS.
Things already had a list that brings together all repeating tasks and projects and their upcoming generated copies in one place, accessible by typing “Repeat” into the app’s search box.
Things 3.23 is now available as a free update on the App Store for Mac, iPad, iPhone and Vision Pro. Update requires macOS 13.3, iOS and iPadOS 16.4, watchOS 9.1 and visionOS 26, or newer.
