OpenAI adds a ChatGPT mode for teens that includes parental controls, improved content protections, and a focus on learning.
ChatGPT for Teens is “designed to help teens learn, think critically, deepen their understanding, and use AI with confidence,” the company said in a blog post announcing the feature.
The feature includes learning-focused getting started prompts to make it easier to study, practice skills, or explore ideas. ChatGPT’s study mode is built-in, as are learning tools (including quizzes where available) and study times that allow the teen or a related parent/guardian to choose when new eligible chats begin in study mode.
OpenAI claims that reminders encourage users to take breaks, and that there are built-in provisions to make it clear that ChatGPT is an AI and does not have consciousness, feelings or emotions. This safety net is intended to discourage relationship building with the chatbot.
ChatGPT automatically enables ChatGPT for Teens for eligible accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 years of age. Users who think they are seeing the feature in error can verify their age and ask ChatGPT to remove teen protections.
OpenAI says ChatGPT for Teens is rolling out globally to eligible teen accounts on free and paid personal ChatGPT plans starting August 18, with full availability in Australia planned for September 8.
