A wireless keyboard is one of the best ways to quickly transform a tablet or phone into a more productivity-focused setup. Beyond interference, outdated drivers or device compatibility with your system can get in the way; System resource restrictions can cause performance issues, and even faulty or outdated hardware can be a problem. In reality, finding the real culprit will require some troubleshooting.
Find the source of interference and input lag
To first identify whether the connection issues are coming from your current device or the physical keyboard, try connecting the keyboard to another gadget. If the lag or interference disappears, you know the original device is the culprit. USB ports may even interfere with your wireless gadgets. To check the keyboard itself, start with the batteries. Then try disconnecting and reconnecting to the original device via Bluetooth, and if the problems persist, unpair and repair to refresh the entire communication process. Physical damage like a cracked USB receiver usually means it’s time to replace your keyboard. A swollen, leaking battery, or batteries that don’t hold their charge – especially when the battery isn’t removable – also means you should start looking for a replacement. The same goes for when the input lag you’re experiencing can’t be fixed, when you absolutely can’t find the source of the problem.
If the keyboard exhibits lag when connected to other devices and across multiple sessions, you are likely dealing with a faulty model. Fresh driver installation on PC or firmware updates may or may not help. You can reference the system settings of the device you’re using, but in rare cases, some settings may interfere, such as slow key mode on Samsung devices, which intentionally creates a delay to reduce accidental key presses. If you don’t use any of these modes and have exhausted all other options, it’s time to get a new wireless keyboard.
Keyboards can and do fail, so it’s always a good idea to have a backup on hand. There is a gap between the lifespan of wireless keyboards among users and manufacturers, so their life cycles vary greatly depending on user interactions. A durable keyboard can last 10 years for one person and only two years for another if they use it more often. In short, you could be forced to replace your keyboard at any time, and non-repairable lag is definitely a sign that it’s time.
