You would think that most video doorbells, like the Ring version, are waterproof since they are intended to be installed outdoors. After all, the goal is to show you who is at your door, whether it’s a courier or a lawyer. But these devices are not really waterproof: they are water resistant. What does that mean, exactly? Let’s break it down.
Waterproof, at least the traditional term, means that an item is completely protected from moisture and, to some extent, can even be submerged. Survival depth differs, typically ranging from a quick dive to hundreds of feet. Water resistance, like Ring Video Doorbell cameras, simply means that a device can withstand exposure to a small amount of moisture, such as light rain, splashes, or drops. They should not be directly exposed to heavy rain, large splashes or even melting snow. According to the company, Ring devices will work well in rain and wind, but should not be submerged in water.
Mystery solved! But not so fast. Some users have reported on X and elsewhere that their Ring devices were actually exposed to rain or snow, at varying increments, and the devices malfunctioned or stopped working. Additionally, the case or shell isn’t exactly weatherproof and may fade in the sun or wear out when exposed to the elements. You’ll want to make sure your Ring has proper overhead protection by installing it under an overhang or in a small corner, or making sure it’s covered, wherever you decide to place it. Additionally, you will need to do your best to keep the device away from rain, snow, dirt, debris, and even direct sunlight. Despite this, most owners say their video doorbells don’t last long, around three to five years.
You can also get a waterproof cover
The Ring Video Doorbell Camera is not waterproof, but if you can’t find a suitable location that’s somewhat protected from the elements, there is an alternative solution. Namely, you can find many weatherproof or protective covers for Ring cameras on Amazon. These are available not only for the doorbell camera, but also for other Ring camera models. As a quick example, this clear shield can withstand extreme temperatures, hot or cold, and includes deep eaves to keep water away. It’s also supposed to protect the outer casing of the Ring device from UV exposure, preventing situations like plastic dry rot.
If you want to try another brand, Eufy offers IP65-rated water-resistant cameras, including video doorbell models. For comparison, Ring doorbells have an IPX5 rating. This means that they are protected against low pressure jets or sprays but have no protection against solid particles. In fact, there are several Ring camera alternatives worth trying. Many have slightly better water resistance and exposure ratings, but you should probably still install them in areas with some sort of coverage. Reolink’s 2K Dual-Band Wi-Fi Battery Smart Doorbell, for example, also has an IP65 rating, as does TP-Link’s Tapo D130 2K Smart Doorbell.
