Over time, you may notice that your USB-C charging cable no longer fits your device like it used to. Either it doesn’t seem to plug in all the way, or it’s hanging poorly, or it’s falling out more than ever. It’s easy to assume that the port is the cause of the problem, especially if the problem persists after swapping cords. Most of the time, however, the solution is simple; the port needs to be cleaned, or rather, you need to remove any dust or debris that has accumulated there. Lint, dust, dirt, hair and other nasty surprises get inside. Once they build up, even in very small increments, it creates problems with the cable – we’re talking millimeters or fractions of an inch.
Removing the debris is quite simple. First, unplug your phone and turn it off, just to be safe. Next, use a flashlight or lamp to look inside the port, inspecting for gravel, debris, or residue. Check around the center piece but also around the outer edge of the port. You’re looking for damage to the connector or frame, including cracks, bends, or missing components. If you don’t see anything physically wrong, start cleaning. Take a can of compressed air or a small handheld air blower and blow away some debris. For anything stubborn, consider using a soft toothbrush or thin cotton swab, but be very careful with harder materials. Some guides recommend using a paper clip or toothpick; In fact, I would avoid this if you can. Once you have removed some contaminants, try plugging in the cable. If it fits well, congratulations. If you’re still having issues or still feel loose, try cleaning a little more. You can safely clean your computer’s USB ports in the same way.
If you must use a hard tool, try a plastic toothpick
Don’t use anything metal like a paperclip or those small SIM card tools to clean your device’s charging port. Metal tools and sharp objects in general should be avoided at all costs as they have a high risk of damaging the connector inside or damaging the metal contacts which are quite delicate. A can of compressed air or an electric air blower is your best choice. But if you have trouble moving solid debris and insist on using something sturdier, you can opt for the tip of a plastic toothpick. This is a much better choice than anything made of metal or even a wooden toothpick: wood can splinter and trap more pieces inside. This is actually a reliable and simple cleaning tip to help you get rid of dusty charging ports of all sizes once and for all, not just your phone’s USB-C ports. There are also dedicated port cleaning tools, in particular, and other cleaning kits that have similar probes.
Always make sure your phone is turned off beforehand to avoid electrical short circuits or faults. Then, carefully use the pick to remove or loosen the debris inside. Use compressed air for good measure to blow out anything you’ve loosened. You might be surprised to learn that most common USB problems can be fixed by simply cleaning the port. Aside from faulty hardware or broken contacts, debris gets in the way of electrical components.
Seek professional help if there is more at stake
Home and DIY checks of your USB ports are probably the best and most affordable solution, provided there is no physical damage to the port or connector. If you notice damage during your initial inspections, it may be necessary to seek professional help and make repairs. Visible damage is one of the easiest ways to determine if your phone’s USB charging port is broken. Physical damage may include bent pins, broken metal components, or a warped or crushed frame; These are also telltale signs that more advanced repair will be necessary.
If the port appears physically loose, not just the cable, for example if the parts move or shift without much pressure, the assembly may need to be repaired or re-soldered, in which case a professional repair is also the most likely solution. Additional signs that you should seek professional repairs include a port or cable that becomes unusually hot, strange odors or burning smells, visible changes like sparks or falling bits, and, of course, if there has been exposure to liquid or moisture.
