In the war between cursive writing and printing, everyone loses.
Apparently it’s Instagram’s new wordmark. Apropos of nothing, Instagram head Adam Mosseri revealed the new logo on Thursday, providing a brief explanation that it’s time for a “cleaner, more modern” refresh of the brand. It seems that this is not a joke. However, after staring at the new lettering for a full minute, with disgust and confusion growing by the second, we concluded that it might be corporate anger bait. So let us all obey with joy and malice.
Take a close look at the new Instagram logo. Study its curves and recognize how abruptly and randomly they end. Trace its lines and notice that some of them connect while others do not – making the consecutive “t” and “a” particularly stand out, as if to say THANKS with a cute British accent, or perhaps suggest that this is a space for secret vacations and meetings. Enjoy its unique blend of semi-cursive lettering and sans-serif printing. Ask yourself if it would be better if the bottom of the “g” actually flowed into something. Try to make sense of that ominous, semi-connected “r.”
Now just take a look at the logo. It says “Instagzam,” right?
These are our initial thoughts on the new Instagram wordmark, but please share your own feelings below. What is its most egregious design sin? Or maybe you love it – in which case, explain.
