Apple Pay will launch in India by October, reports Commercial standardciting people familiar with the matter. Apple Pay will support major credit card networks like Visa and Mastercard, but will not support transactions through the country’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at launch.
Apple would need permission from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for this to happen, and it would also need to partner with a sponsor bank to route the transactions. Negotiations are said to be ongoing.
Bloomberg reported in February that Apple was in talks with major Indian banks with the aim of making Apple Pay operational in the country this year.
