Google today updated Gemini for Mac to add a quick new keyboard shortcut that enables voice mode. By pressing and holding the Fn key, users can talk to Gemini naturally from any window on their desktop computer.
Gemini supports intelligent dictation, so users can speak to the chatbot using natural language and Gemini will transcribe their words into text. Ums, ahs and other filler words are removed in the process and can detect corrections mid-sentence, dropping formatted text at the cursor.
There is a mode of reasoning compatible with the screen. If enabled, Gemini can see what’s on the Mac screen to complete tasks. Users can highlight files, images, text or documents and ask Gemini to edit, summarize and compose content in the application they are working in. Gemini is also capable of generating and editing images when screen recognition mode is enabled.
Double-pressing the Fn key is one of the options for triggering the Mac’s built-in dictation feature, so Gemini’s replacement will be familiar to those who prefer Gemini.
Gemini’s new Mac Voice Mode is rolling out globally to all Gemini for Mac users in English, with Google planning to add more languages in the future.
