With news that AI data centers are harming local ecosystems, it’s easy to have a knee-jerk reaction and think that everything humans build is inherently damaging. After all, something as simple as a paved road obviously impedes the movement of wildlife large and small, so it’s not a stretch to believe that any artificial constructions will inevitably cause damage to the environment. However, this does not appear to be the case for solar farms. Emitting no greenhouse gas emissions and requiring minimal water usage is great in itself, but the fact that solar farms sometimes help endangered species is icing on the cake.
Believe it or not, if approached with a little care, a solar farm can both protect the area’s insect species and promote pollination. Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory have closely studied two Minnesota solar farms, both located on abandoned farmland and restored with native wildflowers and grasses. After five years of careful and consistent measurements, the research team confirmed significant growth in native flowers and plants, while beneficial insect species, including bees, butterflies, wasps and hornets, also became more abundant. In fact, the number of creatures has tripled, particularly benefiting bees, whose numbers have increased 20-fold.
Why is this important?
So what made this discovery so important? Tackling climate change head on requires lots of solar panels, which also means land. Specifically, optimal development of solar installations (that can meet our environmental goals and grid demand) will require approximately 10 million acres of land. Of course, you don’t want to disturb local wildlife or ecosystems, which is why disused agricultural fields are the ideal place to receive the bulk of the signs.
Revitalizing these lands by planting native flowers and grasses is therefore a logical approach to supporting insect conservation on solar farms. At the same time, the increase in insect population could provide a significant boost to the neighboring farmland biome. How? The researchers noted that the insects that were grazing on the solar farm’s plants eventually made their way to local farms and pollinated those crops as well.
All things considered, this is just another piece of evidence that solar panels actually save lives. Unfortunately, insect populations face the same perils as other species. You can blame the turn of events on climate change and the use of pesticides. However, the damage can be reversible, which is absolutely important because these creatures are important cogs in the ecosystem. From pollination to improving soil health, insects are our friends, and if solar farms full of native plants can help, why not offer them a helping hand?
