Amazon plans to deploy up to 5,105 satellites in low Earth orbit that will use Globalstar spectrum to provide voice, data, messaging and emergency services to devices like the iPhone. Amazon’s project is expected to improve the iPhone’s existing satellite features and support new features.
Apple uses Globalstar for the satellite features of the iPhone and Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Amazon is in the process of acquiring the company. Apple and Amazon have reached an agreement under which Globalstar will work alongside Amazon’s Leo satellite network, with Globalstar and Amazon Leo powering Apple’s future satellite services.
Amazon’s proposed constellation of 5,105 satellites will allow devices to receive satellite-based cellular service in areas where a cell tower is not available. Amazon says the system will offer customers improved speed and throughput, and will be able to reach any compatible mobile device with a satellite-enabled chipset. Amazon specifically highlights its partnership with Apple in its blog post announcing the satellite plan.
Amazon Leo has already announced an agreement with Apple to power satellite services for supported iPhone and Apple Watch models, including Satellite Emergency SOS, Messaging, Find My and Satellite Roadside Assistance, and to collaborate with Apple on future satellite services using the Wide Area Network.
Amazon plans to deploy five orbital shells intended to reach different parts of the planet. Three will cover densely populated areas, while others will extend their service to polar areas. Amazon has filed an application with the FCC for the system and is awaiting approval. Amazon plans to deploy satellites starting in 2028, and the Globalstar merger is expected to be completed in 2027 after receiving regulatory approval.
