Some developers working on Marathon were also laid off, and studio head Justin Truman resigned.
Bad things are happening at Bungie. Sony has just announced a major round of layoffs, primarily affecting the team behind the Destiny franchise. We do not know that many employees were affected, only that it is a “significant number.”
Sony says it “explored several alternatives before concluding that a reduction was necessary to align the studio’s resources with its current priorities and long-term goals.” This comes directly after the final content update for Destiny 2and was probably already in the works before that. We learned via Bloombergreported in May that developers were not working on Destiny 3 and that layoffs at Bungie were likely coming.

This decision also impacted certain members of the Marathon team, although this game is still receiving content updates. Sony says the remaining team will work on Marathon alongside “incubation efforts for future projects”. There have even been cuts to Sony’s games division, mainly affecting people working alongside Destiny and Marathon developers.
These discounts go all the way up. Bungie Studio Head Justin Truman Resigns, According to Bloomberg. It’s no secret that Sony isn’t happy Destiny 2 financials, with the company saying last year that the game’s “sales and user engagement did not meet expectations” it was counting on when the electronics giant purchased Bungie.
Sony acquired Bungie in 2022, in a deal worth $3.6 billion. The company has since written down its value to around $2.8 billion, representing a loss of more than $700 million.
