Unhinged, from developer Oxenfree Night School, stars Zoë Kravitz, Sadie Sink and Troy Baker.
Netflix has revealed a new game from the team behind the Oxenfree series that features well-known actors and clever phone-based ideas that aim to make the experience as immersive as possible. Disarticulated stars Zoë Kravitz as Ava, who is stuck in her apartment building as a hurricane hits the area. However, she is not alone.
Sadie Sink Stranger Things Fame plays Claire, Ava’s friend who lives in an apartment building across the street. Claire can visit Ava and offer her advice over the phone. Video game mainstay Troy Baker plays Ava’s building super. Although the cast is quite star-studded, that’s perhaps the most compelling thing about Disarticulated This is what Night School (the first game studio purchased by Netflix) does with the smartphone controller setup.
Netflix says Ava’s hands mirror your phone’s movements, so you can move her to point her flashlight at something. Disarticulated will also broadcast calls and texts Ava receives to your phone, which will ring, vibrate and play audio. It’s much more interesting than just using your handset as a touchscreen controller.
The first-person game features a story mode for those who just want to experience the narrative without having to worry about a timer. In normal mode, certain events require you to find a certain item in the room before the timer runs out. Otherwise, Ava dies and you will return to the last checkpoint.
Netflix suggests it’s a relatively compact experience. “All you need is a Netflix account, your phone and the same amount of time you would need to watch an episode of your favorite show,” it says. That’s not entirely true because you’ll also need a TV and a solid internet connection, but I digress. You can check Disarticulated on Netflix from June 30.
