Google really wants Android users to know about its artificial intelligence (AI). Alongside the rollout of Android 17 to Pixel and other Android phones, Google also released its June Pixel Drop, both of which contain a barrage of goodies for users to take advantage of. While Google adds a lot to the Android experience, the focus on new elements like video editing with Gemini Omni, as well as other AI features, means many may have overlooked something quite interesting for older Pixel devices.
Pixel 9a and Pixel 8a gain access to Apple Airdrop. This feature allows iPhone and iPad users to quickly exchange photos or documents, although Google has been slowly getting the Pixel series into the action. What’s particularly nice is that neither party needs additional software to exchange files, as AirDrop is supported on Pixel phones via Quick Share.
While it’s a rather small feature, it’s incredibly useful and easily one of the coolest features arriving in Android’s June 2026 update. More phones having more options is never a bad thing. Even though Google continues to tout the capabilities of its Gemini AI model, it still offers plenty of features for users looking for more in an update.
How to get started with AirDrop via Quick Share
Since November 2025, Google has offered support for Apple AirDrop via Quick Share on a variety of devices, starting with the Pixel 10 line. Now, the Pixel 9a and 8a are joining the fun, giving all devices in the Pixel 9 line AirDrop access. Unfortunately, AirDrop support is still strangely missing from the Pixel 8 Pro and the base model Pixel 8, which may be a shame for those still using those devices.
For Android users who want to use AirDrop, open Quick Share, select the items you want to send, and choose your recipient. Make sure “Share with Apple devices” is enabled in your Quick Share settings and that the iPhone is close to Android. Make sure the iPhone’s AirDrop visibility is set to “Everyone for 10 minutes,” which can be done by long-pressing the AirDrop icon from Control Center. If Quick Share is set up correctly on Android, Apple users simply need to follow the usual AirDrop process.
While users will definitely appreciate Google’s new updates, the experience hasn’t been entirely smooth for all users. There are reports that some Google apps may not work over Wi-Fi with the update. Android Authority also reported that Android 17 disrupts touch inputs on some Pixel devices. Still, keeping your phone up to date guarantees access to the latest security patches as well as exciting new features, so be sure to check if one is available for your device.
