Booking an Uber may be second nature to some given that the rideshare service has been available on mobile devices for over 15 years. The more experienced the pilot, the smoother things can be. Unless you leave your belongings behind and the driver speeds away. Alas, phones top Uber’s 10th lost and found list, released in early June 2026, with more than a million lost phones reported in the past year. But those aren’t the only tech gadgets forgotten in Ubers, with the Nintendo Switch also ranked first on one of Uber’s lists. Lost items don’t necessarily stay lost for good. Uber has a recovery service, which it updated this year, to make the recovery process easier.
Uber shared some other interesting findings in its 2026 report, revealing that New York City was the most likely place to forget something in an Uber, with July 17 being the most forgotten day of the year. The smartphone is at the top of the top 10 most forgotten objects, like the previous year. Furthermore, and excluding phones, Uber’s latest top 10 technological elements are unexpected. Headphones were ranked fifth while laptops ranked 10th on the list. Below is the full list.
Nintendo Switch in the lead
In its 2025 report, Uber named Apple “the most lost brand in Uber rides.” Although phones are considered mainstream items rather than tech items for the purposes of its reporting, several Apple products were included in the “top 10 left behind tech items” for 2026, including AirPods, Apple TV, Apple Pencil and AirTag. Funny enough, the latter is actually a product that will allow the user to track the Uber car where they left it.
Uber did not provide figures for the tech items in this top 10. Although the “top 10 left behind tech items” includes four Apple products, none takes the top spot. The Nintendo Switch portable game console arrives first, followed by other rather surprising elements.
- Nintendo Switch
- Drone
- AirPods
- Apple TV
- Square card reader
- Garage opener
- Apple Pencil
- PlayStation 4
- AirTag
- Walkie-talkie
Uber highlighted the Nintendo Switch in its 2025 report, when it revealed that more than 70 units had been forgotten in an Uber car the previous year.
Uber’s new recovery system is live
Whether you left the latest model iPhone, a Nintendo Switch, a dishwasher, 420 donuts, or a 75-gallon fish tank in an Uber last year, your items may not be lost for good. Uber has a process for recovering lost products, which the company says it has improved this year. The process takes place directly in the Uber app, users are advised to go to the Activity tab in the bottom icon menu and then locate the “Find a lost item” option in the Help menu. This is where users can report the missing item. After that, they will have to wait for a notification from the driver.
Once the driver sends the confirmation, the user will have a “Request Return Trip” option which will initiate a new trip with the original driver. They will need to enter a destination address so the driver can bring the lost item, confirm and pay the fare. Once the driver arrives, users will share a PIN to confirm the return. The update will initially be available in select markets, including “California, Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington DC, Georgia, Minnesota, and Massachusetts.” Uber said in a blog post that it would roll out the feature to all U.S. markets by the end of the year.
The only problem with the new procedure is when Uber customers forget their phones in their car. In this scenario, users will need to log in to Uber’s help page from a computer to start the recovery process. Uber has an updated support document that provides users with additional information for this scenario.
