If you want to buy a cheap phone in the United States, Motorola is one of the few mainstream companies you should check out, as it has become a reliable manufacturer of affordable smartphones. The company’s smartphone portfolio offers a variety of options, but the cheapest Motorola phone, the Moto G Play 2026, is the one for you. Motorola revealed the Moto G Play 2026 phone near the end of 2025, priced at $180. Unfortunately, the company hasn’t been immune to the current memory crisis, caused in part by the rise of AI data centers, which is driving up the price of all kinds of consumer gadgets.
The company revised the price to $250 in April, but despite this, the Moto G Play 2026 remains the cheapest Motorola phone sold in the United States. This phone features a 6.7-inch HD+ LCD panel (1604×720 pixels resolution) with a 120Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to protect the screen from everyday accidents like drops. Under the hood is a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 processor, 4GB of memory, and a 5,200mAh battery with 18W fast charging support and a promise of up to two days of battery life.
Motorola only sells the Moto G Play with 64GB of storage, which might not be enough for everyone. The good news is that it’s one of the few Android phones with a microSD card slot: you can use a card up to 1TB if you need more space. It also comes with a single 32 MP rear camera, an 8 MP selfie camera, and a headphone jack – another Android hardware feature we wish still existed.
Should you buy the Motorola Moto G Play?
On paper, the Motorola Moto G Play doesn’t seem like a bad deal for anyone who needs a cheap Android phone. Design-wise, it looks modern, with a hole cut out for the selfie camera. Android Central reviewed this phone and loved its vegan leather finish on the back and the battery life. The site says performance isn’t fast and the cameras are poor. It concluded that the Moto G Play 2026 can be considered as a temporary phone or for your child.
CNET wasn’t impressed with the phone’s camera, memory and storage, nor its sluggish performance without enabling Motorola’s built-in RAM Boost feature. However, CNET praised the phone’s battery life, noting that it can last around two days on average usage. The site says the Moto G Play is good for light use, like texting and calling, but isn’t the best phone if you need better value for what this device offers. PC Mag highlighted the camera, storage, low-resolution screen, and short three-year support window as the main drawbacks and ultimately recommended the Samsung Galaxy A16 5G as the better option.
On Amazon, the Motorola Moto G Play 2026 has an average rating of 4.2 stars out of 5 from just over 1,750 reviewers, 82% of whom vouched for the phone and gave it a 4 or 5 star rating. Users said it was well built, had excellent battery life, and was well priced. However, some users have expressed concerns about the phone’s performance and build quality. In a nutshell, the Moto G Play 2026 is a phone worth considering, but due to its cost, don’t expect much. It offers just enough for the price but isn’t the best you can get.
